About this Site

This web was written using a combination of Netscape 3.0, Internet Explorer, GNN Press and MS Front Page. It took about 15 hours to create the original frameless version, and about 8 hours to convert it to the framed version.

The animated title (ZODIAC1.GIF) and the spinning atom  (ATOM.GIF) were created using GIF Workshop, and later edited with MS GIF Animator.

All other animations are taken from public-domain libraries on the web.

The pictures in the current progress section come from two different sources:

The first ones with nice color were originally taken by a Nikon N6006 35mm camera. The photograph was then scanned with a Mustek (very cheap: $149) scanner.

The middle ones, that appear almost black-and-white, were first recorded by a Canon E08 video camcorder. This was then digitized by a Snappy ($179) video digitizer. I think the poor color is mostly due to the all flourescent lighting about the work area.

The latest ones were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950 digital camera.

All of the pictures are stored in JPEG format, with a pretty high compression factor. The image quality suffers some but they load much faster!

After a most unsatisfying experience on AOL the new server is Europa Communications, a local ISP here in Portland. I am paying $57 for 3 months of unlimited internet access with 10MB of storage space.

UPDATE:As a result of my moving to Colorado the web page has moved again, this time to a server at ireg.com. I'm paying $36/year for web-hosting only, plus $19.95/year for the domain name.

The builder's log is actually maintained in a FileMaker Pro database that is kept on a notebook pc in my workshop. I wrote a short C program that converts it into the LOG.HTM index file and the multitude of HTML files for each date. If you're really curious, the C code is available here.

The 'flying' airplane was written in dynamic HTML (only supported by MSIE 4.0 and Netscape Communicator or better at this time).

My computer is an AMD K6-400 generic computer, put together from Frye's electronics.
