Remove the engine from the plane and brought it home. Bought a 10 x 1.25mm helicoil kit. Removed the left head to get at one of the case bolts. Piston tops and heads look normal. Removed valve springs from all valves to check if the valve guides had slipped. All are sticking out of the head 5/8" plus or minus about a mm, so I think they are ok.
Removed the redrive to get at the piston pin for #3 cylinder. Removed pins from #1 and 3 cylinders and the remaining case bolts and split the case, leaving the crankshaft in the other half of the engine and the pistons in the heads. Found eight small pieces of metal in the bottom of the oil pan, I hope these are left over from when the distributer gear disintegrated.
Visible internals of the engine look normal.
