After a long delay and a couple machine shops, I finally have a head with all the guides in the proper place. Reinstalled the head and adjusted the valves, reconnected the intake manifold on that side.
Carefully measured for future reference how far the valve guides stick out from the head on the right side (cyclinders 2 & 4): intakes protrude 1/2", exhausts 11/16".
